What should I know before going for an MRI scan?

The patient lies on a moving table that is placed into the MRI machine. Most examinations are performed while lying on their back.

You must remain still during the entire examination. Visit the toilet before the examination. If you experience coughing attacks while lying on your back, you can bring medication with you to help reduce coughing.

The examination area is located in the middle of the gantry (tube).

The duration of the examination is from 10 minutes to 1.5 hours.

The machine makes loud noises, so headphones or earplugs are recommended.

The staff will be behind glass at all times, and the patient will be given an SOS in case of an emergency.

Usually, no special preparation is required, except in cases with contrast medium - then you must have an empty stomach before an MRI of the abdomen and pelvis.

If a contrast medium examination is planned, a blood creatinine level (kidney function test) and GFR must be passed.

Why? If a contrast agent is to be administered, it is important to make sure that the kidneys are able to excrete it.
